Indiana Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz Outlines Plans

Courier-Journal (06/18/13) Banta, Megan

Speaking at the Indiana Youth Institute's Postsecondary Counseling Institute, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz outlined two initiatives to improve the state's school improvement model and reorganize school guidance programs. One initiative would have 13 outreach coordinators in nine regions work with counselors to ensure a more active school improvement process that focuses on "equity and high quality." "It's going to be more about school culture and what happens in our schools, and it's going to be about increasing the language arts and math scores that we have in our schools," she said. The state will examine areas the department should address to help students and ensure resources are available to counselors and schools to address those needs. Ritz also indicated that career and technical education can help students leave high school prepared for the future. "I want equality. I want kids all over the state of Indiana, all of them, to have pathways to what they want to do," she said. As part of the process, counselors should discuss with students the importance of building their resumes and what is necessary to have a successful career. The second initiative will work with counselors to help them discover and break down the barriers that stand in the way of counseling. Ritz said, "Kids do that every day -- imagine possibilities, and then try to figure out how to make them happen. And a lot of them can't make them happen on their own, and so that's where the adults come in, guiding them, molding that kind of attitude to where it needs to go."
