In the Race to the Top, Will Hawaii Get There First?

Hawaii has cruised through its policy actions and program development lists as part of its Race to the Top to-do list, including transitioning all grades to Common Core standards for the 2013-14 school year, providing intense teacher professional development aligned with the new standards, and improving and completing a longitudinal data system. Hawaii must now concentrate on finalizing the details of its new teacher evaluation system, completing a study on what alternative models of compensation linked to the new evaluation system would look like, and handing out academic achievement awards to successful schools. State Superintendent of Education Kathryn Matayoshi says the hard work of classroom implementation is just beginning. "We would have never embarked on all of these changes at once if it weren't for Race to the Top. Now it's time we keep moving forward." Hawaii received a $75 million grant in 2010, and it is not likely to need a cost extension for its work. "We're feeling really positive," she says, about getting off high-risk status.
