'Hybrid Learning' Ahead, Says Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary Tomalis

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (03/29/13) Zlatos, BillPennsylvania Education Secretary Ronald Tomalis says the Internet ultimately will enable schools to tailor education to the individual needs of students. He believes such changes will be driven by new parents, who are used to having numerous choices and will expect their children to be given a wide range of educational options. Tomalis says "hybrid learning," or a mixture of brick-and-mortar schools and online education, is on the horizon, and students may one day have a choice from among 100 languages to learn, for instance. He is supportive of the governor's plan to sell the state's wine and spirits stores and put the anticipated $1 billion in proceeds toward four-year competitive grants that districts could use for school safety, programs to ensure students are on grade level by third grade, individualized learning programs, and STEM programs. The money could be given to schools beginning in the 2014-15 school year if the legislature approves the proposal.
