Hawaii DOE's Race to the Top Grant No Longer in 'High-Risk' Status
Pacific Business News (07/29/13) Blakely, JennaAccording to a recent U.S. Department of Education evaluation, the Hawaii State Department of Education's four-year, $75 million Race to the Top grant will not longer be considered high risk. Since December 2011, the state has show significant progress in rolling out its approved plans after receiving high risk status in five assurance areas -- Standards and Assessments, Data Systems, System Alignment and Performance Monitoring, Great Teachers, Great Leaders, and Turning Around Persistently Low-Achieving Schools -- from the DOE. State Superintendent of Education Kathryn Matayoshi said in statement that the removal of the high-risk status was "great news that validates the good work that [has] been done by the teachers, educational leaders, and our community partners." She added, "The transformation of our public schools is in full swing. We are staying the course in our mission to ensure all students graduate from our public schools prepared for college and careers." Among the improvements achieved by Hawaii are successfully working with union partners to formalize a new evaluation system for teachers and principals and improved communication with the community and within the department.
