Grants Expand Military Children's Educational Opportunities

Marine Corps Times (10/04/12) Miles, Donna

Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) Director Marilee Fitzgerald says that because students of military parents must make physical and emotional adjustments to as many as eight schools between kindergarten and high school, recipients of the 2012 DODEA grants must strive to create programs that will benefit all military students. "That is what this grant program is about. It is about extending those opportunities to help our children continue their academic careers so they are not disrupted," she says. About 80 of the 186 grants worth $214 million issued since 2009 have supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) projects, while others have funded foreign language and advanced placement programs and student-support services. The Department of Defense added additional funding to the program, which helped DODEA offer more than $50 million in grants to 44 recipients. "Our military families make many, many sacrifices on behalf of this nation each and every day. And we are committed ... to ensuring that the education of their children will not be among their sacrifices," says Fitzgerald. "The goal is to try to find the absolute best programs ... that will have a powerful impact on our children."
