Graduation Rates Hit New High

According to the Texas Education Agency, the on-time graduation rate for Texas high school students increased 1.8 percent from 2011 to 87.7 percent in 2012, marking the fifth consecutive yearly gain. State Education Commissioner Michael Williams says, "Last year, the Class of 2011 in Texas set a graduation rate that was among the highest in the nation, and now the Class of 2012 has bested that number. ... Districts across our state work every year to keep students in school and to get those students who have left to return to the classroom." He adds that he will closely watch districts to see how they address dropout rates.
