Governor Cuomo Launches 'NYS Community Schools' Initiative to Transform Schools in Distressed Communities Into Hubs for Children & Family Services

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently rolled out the NYS Community Schools initiative to transform schools in distressed communities into hubs that provide healthcare, counseling, nutrition, job preparation, and other services for children and families. The first round of the program will give around 30 schools three-year grants of up to $500,000 each to forge community partnerships that provide academic, health, extra-curricular, and social services in the school building. According to State Education Commissioner John King Jr., "The New York State Board of Regents has a history of advocating for establishing programs for students and families that provide academic enrichment activities along with a broad array of student and family development opportunities within their communities. We are pleased to be partnering with the Governor to foster Community Schools across the state."
