Georgia Leaves No Child Left Behind

CBS Atlanta (GA) (05/07/13) McNary, Tony

Georgia Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Barge recently unveiled the state's new accountability system, the Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), which will replace No Child Left Behind's Adequate Yearly Progress measurement. The new system uses a 100-point scale to measure schools and school districts from elementary to high school. "Under the old accountability system, No Child Left Behind, everything hinged on whether they passed the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test or whether they passed the Georgia High School Test. There was no incentive for students to pursue the rigors, pursue advanced placement courses, or pursue college level courses," Barge said. The CCRPI not only takes into account math and English but also how students perform in science, social studies, and other areas to determine the school's average score. "What we try to do is have an index that is clear and easy to understand for all people involved, so parents also know exactly why a school is not performing well," he said.
