"There are substantial gains that I think we should be very happy about," he says. For end-of-course exams, students in all grade levels and for all subgroups had higher passing rates for the Algebra I exam, with 64 percent of first-time test-takers earning a Level 3 or better on the five-point scoring system. Performance on geometry and Biology I exams also improved, while the U.S. history test was given for the first time this year. The Algebra I exam accounts for 30 percent of a student's course grade and passing is required for graduation, while the other tests make up 30 percent of students' grades but passing is not required for high school credit. "It's a race to make sure we have more kids college-ready," Bennett says.
