Florida Districts, Colleges Should Collaborate on Dual Enrollment, Commissioner Tony Bennett Says

Under a new model effective July 1, Florida districts must pay college tuition for high school students taking dual enrollment courses, but districts say they cannot use per-student funding to support college courses on top of paying for the students' books. However, a recent memo from State Education Commissioner Tony Bennett urges cooperation between districts and colleges. He says, "While I understand there may continue to be challenges as you work toward the Aug. 1, 2013, submission of the 2013-14 Dual Enrollment Articulation Agreement, I encourage school districts and Florida College System institutions to work collaboratively to ensure Florida's students continue to have access to high-quality dual enrollment opportunities." Although the Florida Department of Education cannot change the law, some State Board members are pushing lawmakers to revisit the funding model.
