Florida Department of Education Releases Proposed School Grade Formula Changes

Florida Education Commissioner Pam Stewart released proposed changes to the state's school grading system, which will be considered at the Feb. 18 State Board of Education meeting. Among other things, automatic letter-grade declines would be eliminated, and bonus points for middle schools when students complete industry certifications and high school end-of-course tests also would end. Additionally, changes in the weighting of high school graduation rates and advanced courses were proposed. At a recent meeting of district school superintendents, Stewart said, "What do we want to include in there that will be understandable, clear, and transparent and include student outcomes? That is my focus and that is what we're going to try and do as we change the school grading system."
