Five States to Increase Class Time in Some Schools

Associated Press (12/03/12) Lederman, JoshOn Dec. 3, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Tennessee announced they could add at least 300 hours of learning time to the calendar in some schools beginning in 2013. The move is part of a three-year pilot program to boost student achievement and make U.S. schools more competitive on a global level. The 40 schools will work with districts, parents, and teachers to make the school day longer, add more days to the school year, or both. The pilot program could be expanded to include additional schools, including those in low-income communities. A mix of federal, state, and district funds will cover the additional learning time, which education officials say will provide students with greater access to a well-rounded curriculum, individualized help, and opportunities to reinforce critical math and science skills.
