Feds Give Idaho Schools a Waiver on No Child Left Behind
OregonLive.com (10/17/12)Idaho has been granted a waiver from the No Child Left Behind law by the U.S. Department of Education, which also approved the state's new accountability system that uses academic growth and other measures to assess student achievement. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna believes the new system will better gauge student achievement and better identify schools performing well and those that are struggling. "This is a great day for Idaho students, Idaho schools and Idaho teachers. Our previous accountability system was put in place when Idaho's seniors were in second grade. It is a decade old and must be updated to more accurately measure student achievement now and in the future," says Luna. The State Board of Education must still give final approval to the new accountability plan. So far, No Child Left Behind waivers have been granted to 33 other states and the District of Columbia.
