FTC Releases, "Data Brokers: A Call for Transparency and Accountability" Report

Last month, the FTC published, "Data Brokers: A Call for Transparency and Accountability," which highlighted the results of its study of nine data brokers. The current practices of these data brokers includes indefinite storage of consumer data, sharing of data across brokers, and collection and inference of consumer data without the individual's knowledge. The FTC is recommending that Congress consider legislation that would promote transparency and accountability of data broker practices and would provide consumers with increased awareness and choice regarding the collection and use of their own data. The FTC also suggests more specific legislation for data brokers that provide: marketing products, risk mitigation, or people search services.
