Education Initiative Aims to Boost College Grads in Northern Maine

Maine Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen recently unveiled the Aroostook Aspirations Initiative to encourage students to attend college. Beginning in fall 2014, the program will award $1,000 scholarships to 16 high school seniors per year to attend any of the four colleges in the northern part of the state, as well as provide them with internships with local businesses and training to help them build their own businesses once they graduate. Bowen believes the initiative could be a model for other parts of the state. The initiative was established with a $300,000 gift from Ray and Sandy Gauvin of Presque Isle.
