Education Grants Seek to Improve La. Schools

Monroe News Star (LA) (08/01/13) Hasten, Mike

Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White has announced the winners of the Believe and Succeed grants intended to transform struggling schools. The 21 winners will share a total of $5.8 million in funding to turn around D or F schools or establish new schools. Federal funds account for 80 percent of the grant money, which is divided 69 percent for failing school turnarounds and 31 percent for new school creations, with 67 percent awarded to school systems and the remainder shared by charter schools and individuals. "No child should ever have to wake up and attend an F school," says White. "It is time to stop talking about politics and start talking about kids. We're doing this for the kids."
