Education Dept. at Work on Pre-K Grading Plans
Lafayette Daily Advertiser (LA) (10/10/12) Deslatte, MelindaLouisiana Superintendent John White is working on a common assessment and grading system for the state's publicly funded pre-kindergarten and early childhood education programs in accordance with a new law. White hopes to release a "conceptual framework" for public comment by the end of the month and plans to make recommendations to the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education in December. The department must consider how to evaluate academic progress for young children of different ages and the consequences associated with the standards, says White, and whether every publicly funded facility will receive a letter grade remains uncertain. A plan must be presented to lawmakers by March 1, and it is slated for full implementation by the 2015-16 school year.
