Education Commissioner Talks Early Childhood in Mankato

Leading a discussion on early childhood education, Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius talked about the importance of early learning and the availability of scholarships. About $40 million in scholarship money was made available by Gov. Mark Dayton and the legislature to expand access to low-income families. Cassellius said the Department of Education is working to streamline the application process to speed up the approval process this fall, enabling districts to gain control over approving the scholarships. She also indicated that school districts will be encouraged to conduct needs assessments in their communities.
