Education Commissioner Signs Agreement With France to Promote K-12 Educational Opportunities

McPherson Sentinel (Kan.) (04/01/13)

A memorandum of understanding signed April 1 by Kansas Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker and Académie d'Orléans-Tours Recteur Marie Reynier aims to establish cooperative programs to teach French in K-12 classrooms in Kansas and English in classrooms in the region southwest of Paris, France. These programs include school collaborations, internship opportunities for students in the partner region, and one-year job-to-job teacher exchange programs. The agreement will last four years and includes an automatic one-year renewal if both parties want to continue the partnership. DeBacker said, "Agreements like the one signed today are an important part of ensuring Kansas students and educators have the opportunity to be exposed to customs, cultures, and educational practices from around the world. Our state has been enriched by our agreements with Spain and with China, and I'm delighted that we are now able to connect with our colleagues in France to advance educational opportunities here as well as at the Académie d'Orléans-Tours." The state forged similar agreements in 2001 with Spain and 2006 with China.
