Education Commissioner: International Test Results 'Sobering'

The U.S. results on the latest international math and reading tests from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) were "sobering," said Kansas Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker. "It shows we rank about middle of the pack. It definitely, as a nation, gives us something to think about," she said. However, she noted that the Common Core State Standards would raise the bar for U.S. students and help them improve. "We are getting more depth in terms of what we expect students to know and be able to do," DeBacker said. OECD also indicated in its report on this year's test results that the introduction of the Common Core math standards, in particular, could have benefits for U.S. students in that subject.
