Education Commissioner Details Targeted Support Spending
WCSH6 (Portland, ME) (03/14/13) Waugh, DanielleMaine Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen outlined a new approach to education spending, deemed targeted education support, just days before the governor's biennial education budget will be revealed. Bowen says the approach would allocate about $10 million for programs aimed at principal and teacher evaluations systems, proficiency-based high school diplomas, college transition and adult education, and Career and Technical Education center certification. He says that rather than use a formula to allocate general fund money, the state should "make some strategic investments in targeted areas that we thought would have big returns." He also pointed to the Lewiston School District, where he spoke, as a model for the teacher and principal evaluation programs because it uses feedback to enhance professional training and development.
