Education Commissioner Applauds SAU 13

Conway Daily Sun (NH) (09/11/2012)At a recent teacher and staff breakfast, New Hampshire Education Commissioner Dr. Virginia Barry praised SAU 13 -- which includes schools in Freedom, Madison, and Tamworth -- for its efforts to implement the Common Core standards. "You're one of the districts moving forward. You are really trying to commit to what it really means to be college and career ready," Barry said, adding that the standards will focus on learning progressions instead of grade-level progressions. "In less than a decade we will experience schools without grade levels. We'll be looking at competencies." Barry also discussed the state's Virtual Learning Academy, which served 2,700 students last year in learning a second language, recovering credits, or graduating early. "We had more students complete high school at 11th grade last year than any year recorded in the state of New Hampshire. Students decided they want to get control of their education," she said.
