Education Chief Orders 1 in 3 Oregon Districts to Set Higher Goals on Achievement Compacts

Republic (Columbus, Ind.) (09/22/12)For the first time this year, Oregon's school districts must set goals in "achievement compacts" as part of Gov. John Kitzhaber's plan to bolster education. Oregon Chief Education Officer Rudy Crew has given 69 of the state's school districts until Oct. 15 to rewrite their goals to boost high school graduation rates and third grade reading and math scores by at least one percentage point this school year. Districts, which will not be rewarded or penalized in regard to these goals, could achieve increases of two to five percentage points by better using staff on hand, says Crew. He says the targets "instigate the conversation, and that becomes a source of focused attention in a school and in a community, and that is a driver."
