Demand for State's Course Choice Program Exceeds Capacity

The Louisiana Department of Education says the Course Choice pilot program, which lets students enroll in courses not available in their local schools, has surpassed enrollment capacity and used up all $2 million in funding less than a month after its approval by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Over 2,000 students have been registered for courses during the 2013-14 school year, and 500 families are on a waiting list. According to State Superintendent of Education John White, "Enrollment requests have exceeded our expectations. In order to provide families on wait lists with the courses they have requested for their children, we are going to have to find additional funds."
