DOE Seeks Online Program Funding

KMA Radio (01/02/13) Danielson, DarIowa Education Director Jason Glass requests $1.5 million in funding for the next three years to broaden online education opportunities for high school students. "Last legislative session, the legislature actually codified Iowa Learning Online and gave it the authority to issue credit for students. What we need now is the cash to take it off the ground," he says. "And really, just a couple of years - three years of cash - to build its capacity up to serve students across the state, and then we'd be simply capturing the per pupil dollars that flow out to school districts on a per course basis." Glass says a school district would not have to offer advanced physics, for instance, if the course was offered through Iowa Learning Online, and it could fund the online class using those per pupil dollars. He adds that the online courses will give students access to more specialized courses and help students who struggle in traditional classroom settings.
