Common Core Supporters Firing Back

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) supporters are moving to confront opposition at the state and national levels through public relations and advertising campaigns intended to combat misinformation. All but four states have adopted the standards, and those that have adopted them are on track when it comes to implementation. Council of Chief State School Officers Executive Director Chris Minnich says, "States are standing up for what's right, and organizations are supporting them. There are several types of organizations that are doing that." In Tennessee, for instance, the State Collaborative to Reform Education is working to counter critics of CCSS through social media campaigns, a fact sheet, and more to ensure the public and educators understand that the "standards do not dictate curriculum (e.g., textbooks and reading lists) or prescribe a method of instruction." Meanwhile, Stand for Children Indiana has released two 30-second TV advertisements, as well as radio spots, that defend the standards. "Implementation is critical. ... Simply adopting a set of standards isn't going to make things better," Minnich says.
