CCSSO and National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center), working closely with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) authors, have released an official approach for publishing identifiers and XML designation to represent the CCSS, consistent with their adopted format and now available on www.corestandards.org. There is a need to appropriately identify and link instructional materials, assessment items and other learning assets using a shared system of identifiers and a common XML representation. This work will support states, territories, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity in this effort as they move from widespread adoption of CCSS to implementation.

States and organizations that are planning to digitally align existing or new education resources to the CCSS should carefully consider the degree of alignment necessary for their work. States and other organizations are strongly encouraged to employ the official NGA-CCSSO identifiers. For specific implementations involving a finer level of granularity of the CCSS, it may be beneficial to include the optional extensions being developed under the Granular Identifiers and Metadata for the Common Core State Standards (GIM-CCSS) project.  To learn more about the GIM-CCSS project, please visit www.setda.org
