Common Core Standards: Early Results From Kentucky Are In

U.S. News & World Report (12/04/12) Morella, MichaelKentucky was the first state to sign on to the Common Core State Standards for reading and math in 2010. The standards were implemented in the classroom the same year, and tests aligned with the standards were rolled out in the 2011-12 school year. A report issued in November shows an increase in students prepared for college or careers to 38 percent for the class of 2011 and 47 percent for the class of 2012, despite a decrease in proficiency scores in reading and math. In a recent interview, State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday said, "Everybody who does this the first year of assessment of Common Core should see numbers very similar to what we saw. But I'm very confident that as each year moves forward, as the kids close the gap and the teachers close the gap, we'll see scores go back up." Holliday said the standards have been embraced by both teachers and students, and he believes communicating the standards to educators, parents, and the business community is crucial.
