Common Core Implementation Underway in ND (01/05/14) Johnson, Hannah

Assessments for the new Common Core Standards in English language arts and mathematics will begin in the spring of 2015 in North Dakota. Supporters of the standards say they emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and applying information. "We've been extremely transparent throughout this process," says State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler. Implementation has gone very well, she says, though a number of teachers would like additional time to familiarize themselves with the standards and to complete more professional development related to Common Core. Baesler says the department is looking to provide for those needs. She notes that while Common Core is not the only solution, it is a step in the right direction and "just a piece of the process."
