Common-Core Tests in Works for Students With Severe Disabilities

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium and the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers are working on alternate, Common Core State Standards (CCSS) assessments for students with cognitive disabilities. The alternate-assessment consortia are Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) and the National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) to develop tests with federal funding that will be used for the first time in the 2014-15 academic year. DLM and NCSC also are working to develop model lessons, instructional resources, and specific guidance teachers can use to appropriately apply CCSS to a student population that has only recently been exposed to academic work. DLM project leaders are creating a web of interconnected skills for teachers to follow that all link to academic standards. High school special education teacher Mary Skinner-Alexander from South Dakota says that through other NCSC resources, some of her students can achieve some basic algebra understanding.
