Commissioner Addresses State Education Overhaul

Suburban (09/26/13) Murtha, Jack

During his annual convocation on Sept. 19, New Jersey Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf talked about the education overhaul that includes changes to curriculum standards, the teacher evaluation system effective in September, and a new standardized assessment to be implemented in the 2014-15 school year. According to Cerf, "Our goal is to make sure that every child, regardless of the circumstances into which she or he was born, graduates from high school, ready to be launched into adulthood prepared for success." He hopes the new standards and teacher evaluations will improve standardized test scores and reduce the number of students enrolled in remedial courses in college, noting that the new, in-depth evaluation system will enable districts to put the best teachers in classrooms.
