California to Pass Student Online Personal Information Protection Act

California's Assembly and Senate both passed the 'Student Online Personal Information Protection Act' last week, and the bill is expected to be signed by Governor Brown soon. The law limits the use of K-12 student data to educational purposes and specifically prohibits any commercial use. The bill also includes provisions around the security, storage, and destruction of data over time. Senator Steinberg sponsored the bill and his office put out a fact sheet outlining its key provisions.
