California Budget Gives Schools Money for Common Core Standards

Monterey County Herald (CA) (06/12/13) Salinas, Claudia Melendez

California's budget compromise not only revises how schools receive money but also will give them additional funding to implement new education standards. Schools will receive a one-time allocation of $1.25 billion, or about $200 per student, to implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and the funds will be distributed over two years. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson says, "This budget puts California where it belongs: leading the way in the drive to bring the CCSS to life in our classrooms and prepare students to contribute to our state's future. Dedicating more than $1 billion to training teachers, buying new materials, and investing in technology will help ensure that all children, no matter where they come from or what school they attend, receive the kind of world-class education they deserve." The funding will help ensure schools are ready for CCSS implementation for the 2014-15 school year.
