CCSSO Statement on AFT President Randi Weingarten Speech
In response to a speech given today by AFT President Randi Weingarten, CCSSO Executive Director Chris Minnich offered the following statement:
"The AFT's continued support for the Common Core State Standards is great news for education in this country. When state leaders came together in 2007 around developing clearer, higher standards for students they knew that input and support from educators would be critical to the success of this effort. States across the country are unique and must focus on their individual context when designing and implementing comprehensive reform efforts that improve education for all children. It will remain critical for state leaders and educators to work together to determine the right timeline for implementation of these efforts that affect students, teachers, and principals at the local level. Stepping back now is not an option - we must move forward in our efforts to ensure that every child receives a solid education, at the same time, we must be thoughtful about how we evaluate teachers and use test results in school consequences."
