Baesler Says North Dakota Needs More STEM Education

North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler says more STEM schools and a strategy to integrate STEM into high schools are needed in the state. Baesler says the interdisciplinary nature of STEM learning makes it difficult at the high school level to determine the learning hours for credit in English, math, or science, which are used to calculate graduation requirements and gauge whether students are prepared for college. She says, "We may need new measures of learning to bring this on to high schools. That's my problem to solve. That will be one of my missions." Baesler adds that lawmakers need to earmark money to train teachers in STEM learning. "I hope that [STEM education] grows," she says. "I would like to see it grow throughout the state of North Dakota."
