Assembly Committee Approves New Testing System
Ridgecrest Daily Independent (CA) (05/04/2013) Ciani, John V.Legislation sponsored by California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson was approved by the Assembly Education Committee and sent to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for consideration. Assembly Bill 484 would establish the California Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress for the 21st Century to replace the Standardized Testing and Reporting system. The new statewide assessment system, aligned to the Common Core State Standards, would be used beginning in the 2014-15 school year. These computer-based exams would measure and promote student progress toward college and career readiness. According to Torlakson, "California's students need the real-world skills that open the door to success in a career and in college. These new assessments will tell us whether we're getting the job done - and give teachers and parents new insights and new tools to address the needs of students who need more help."
