Arne Duncan Picks 16 Race to Top District Winners
Education Week (12/11/12) McNeil, MicheleThe U.S. Department of Education announced on Dec. 11 that 16 winners -- including three charter school organizations -- will share $400 million in the Race To the Top district competition. Miami-Dade is the largest urban district on the list, having also recently won the prestigious Broad Prize this year. The grants range from $10 million to $40 million, depending on how many students are enrolled in the district. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said the winners are a mix of education reform leaders and districts that have not received as much attention. Of the 16 districts or groups that won, 11 are in states that did not win the original 12 Race to the Top grants for states, and a few of the winners also serve mostly rural students.
