Alaska Teachers to Be Evaluated on Student Achievement Starting in 2015

Anchorage Daily News (AK) (12/07/12) Boots, Michelle Theriault

On Dec. 7, the Alaska State Board of Education approved a measure that includes student learning data in teacher evaluations. Beginning in the 2015-16 school year, student growth and performance criteria -- including at least one standardized test -- will make up 20 percent of teacher evaluations. That percentage will rise to 50 percent by the 2018-19 school year. State Education Commissioner Mike Hanley says the rule was revised so that teachers are evaluated on student growth over time, not one moment in time. He notes, "What this language is meant to do is recognize what a teacher has control over and doesn't have control over."
