Alaska, Hawaii, West Virginia Win NCLB Waivers
Education Week (5/20/13) Michele McNeilU.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has awarded Alaska, Hawaii and West Virginia NCLB waivers. In total, Secretary Duncan has now awarded waivers to 37 states. The majority of states now operate under a Federally-approved, state-led accountability system. Meanwhile, Congress continues to refrain from the long-overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Hawaii recently also secured a new contract with the state teachers' association, which allowed the state to adhere to its Race to the Top promises. As some states continue to deal with outstanding applications, Secretary Duncan is currently considering granting nine California districts waivers, after their state application was unsuccessful.
