Achievement Gap Targeted With Bus Trip for Preschool Funding

California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson launched a bus tour that will travel from San Diego to Sacramento to promote more early education programs and funding. The seven-city, three-day tour will rally for additional early education dollars as a way to close academic achievement gaps between poor and middle-class children. "Right now students from poverty and from English-learner backgrounds come to kindergarten a year and a half to two years behind their peers. We're aiming at helping our students achieve, get a solid grounding in preschool and early-learning, and then go on and be successful in elementary school," Torlakson said.
