AP Classes Eyed for Inclusion in PSS Online Program
Saipan Tribune (05/16/13) Deposa, MonethRita Sablan, Saipan's Education Commissioner, announced plans to expand the Public School System's (PSS) advanced placement (AP) program to let participating high school students complete their courses at the time and place they wish. Sablan said the decision to include AP classes in the distance education program is tied to students' growing interest in the program. "I do see an expansion [of the distance education program] and hopefully I would like to include AP courses as part of that expansion by next school year," she said. About 1,800 students are currently enrolled in the online program, and Sablan expects this number to grow significantly next school year. PSS budget officials said recently that the distance education program already has used its $503,895 budget for the 48 online classes offered this school year, and about $800,000 more is needed to accommodate the program's planned expansion next school year. "We have to continue to find ways to fund it and we're counting on the next fiscal year budget for PSS," she said.
