16 Schools Honored by Illinois State Board of Education

Southern Illinoisan (04/30/13) Testa, Adam

The Illinois State Board of Education recognized a total of 624 schools with Illinois Honor Roll awards. The awards are given to schools with high poverty rates that have overcome the odds, those that have achieved high-performance scores for three straight years, and those with improvement ratings of 7.5 percent in one year or 15 percent in two years. State Superintendent of Education Chris Koch says the achievements "are even more admirable" given more than $900 million in state-funding cuts since 2009 and the loss of local funding and federal grants. He praises teachers and staff members for tackling problems despite financial limitations and school board members for volunteering time and service.
