15 New Mexico Teachers Approved for $5,000 Stipend for Transferring From A-B to D-F Schools

Las Cruces Sun-News (NM) (11/17/13) Anderson, Lindsey

In New Mexico, 15 teachers in six districts will receive a $5,000 stipend for transferring from schools with A or B grades to schools with D or F grades and teaching at those schools full-time through the 2014-15 school year. "I think we're off to a good start in saying, 'We want a good teacher in our struggling schools," says State Education Secretary Hanna Skandera. "It's the first step but not the last step." The state also offers stipends to teachers who increase the percentage of students achieving scores of 3 out of 5 or better on Advanced Placement exams on a year-to-year basis. Skandera says the new state-mandated teacher evaluation system will, at some point, play a role in allocating these stipends.
