14 Top-Performing Hawaii Public Schools Awarded $1 Million

KHON2.com (Hawaii) (09/10/13)

Fourteen public schools were awarded $1 million in grants for exceptional achievement as part of Hawaii's new Strive HI Performance System, which is the state's redesigned school accountability and performance system that offers rewards to "recognition" schools that demonstrate significant progress in student achievement, graduation rates, and closing achievement gaps. More than 50 percent of the state's recognition schools were Title I schools, signifying that those schools overcame the challenges associated with serving a large number of disadvantaged children from low-income families. Individual grants ranged from $20,000 to $95,000. State Superintendent of Education Kathryn Matayoshi said, "We are excited to provide well-deserved recognition and support to help schools continue to excel in preparing students for college and careers. To get to this point is not easy. Yet these principals and teachers have shown what is possible through a unified effort, hard work and dedication." The funds will support professional development programs, investments in technology, musical instruments, science lab and equipment, among other improvement strategies.
